Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep serves the Duggar Family of the show “19 Kids and Counting”

For Immediate Release

Contact: Gina Harris, Executive Director

Deborah Billingsley, a volunteer affiliated photographer of the nonprofit agency, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) received a call last Friday to serve a family. It was a couple that had lost their baby. As a volunteer and professional photographer, Deborah frequently receives such calls. This particular call happened to be from the Duggar family of the TLC show.

The Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep mission is to introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture. Thousands of families from many different backgrounds and faiths have received services as a way to capture these precious images of their baby. Many families are unprepared for the loss they will suffer. Sometimes having only moments with their child, these images provide tangible proof that their child was real. For many, this is an important part of their healing process. NILMDTS has a network of 7,000 photographers worldwide.

Recently, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, the parents in the show, announced they were pregnant with their 20th child. Last week, they learned the baby’s heart stopped beating. The Duggars reached out to NILMDTS for the nonprofit’s service.

“Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep offers our deepest condolences to the Duggar family. No one should have to suffer the loss of a baby. We hope these images will help bring comfort to the family as they heal,” said Gina Harris, executive director of NILMDTS.

Deborah took the call just like she would from any family. The Duggars kept Deborah on call for the delivery of their baby. Their baby was born Sunday where they learned she was a girl and named her Jubilee Shalom.

Deborah served as a registered nurse for 12 years, and has been a photographer for 20 years. When she heard of NILMDTS, she knew this was a perfect organization to give her time and talents. She served the family not only as a NILMDTS photographer, but also as a friend. Because of Deborah’s professionalism and compassion in serving the family, the Duggars invited her to be the only still photographer at the private memorial service. NILMDTS and Deborah have not released any images to the public.

“Words can’t describe what I’ve experienced these past few days with the Duggar family. I feel honored and blessed to have been in the family’s company. They are the most real, down-to-earth, loving people I have ever met,” said photographer Deborah Billingsley. “If every person on earth could spend just 10 minutes with this family, the world would be a better place.”

“NILMDTS is grateful for Deborah who worked many hours to deliver our service to the Duggar family,” said Sandy Puc’, co-founder and president. “She has been extremely professional in the delivery of our services which I know will bring comfort to the family.”

NILMDTS offers professional photography services to families who have suffered the loss of an infant. NILMDTS members are professional photographers who graciously donate their time and service. The family is provided with a collection of professionally retouched images at no expense. The family is welcome to display the images however they want to memorialize their baby.

NILMDTS was founded in 2005 by Sandy Puc’, a professional photographer, and Cheryl Haggard, a mother who lost her son Maddux shortly after he was born.

Volunteer photographers capture precious moments following newborn's death or stillbirth

Sixteen weeks into her pregnancy, Tania and Thomas Bellamy learned their son had anencephaly, the absence of a large part of the brain and skull. It is one of the most common neural tube defects and occurs early in the development of an unborn baby.
The Bellamys knew Samuel Thomas wouldn’t be with them very long. “A baby who has anencephaly can live up to two or three days,” Tania said. “There’s no way for them to tell you how long. He could have not lived at all or he could have lived for up to two days.”
Two hours after he was born on Nov. 30, 2007, Samuel died. His short time here was captured through dozens of photographs, however, leaving his parents with memories they might have otherwise forgotten.
Before their son was born, the Bellamys contacted the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep foundation, a nonprofit organization that has provided thousands of families of babies who are stillborn or are at risk of dying as newborns with free professional portraits. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is available to all parents suffering the loss of a baby as early as 25 weeks gestation or at the discretion of medical personnel.
“There are things I have in pictures I would have never remembered if I hadn’t had the pictures, because of the anesthesia. ... I don’t remember it all,” Tania said. “I am forever grateful to the organization. It was so helpful to us.”
Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep uses more than 7,000 professional photographers in 25 countries who volunteer their services to families. In the Tri-Cities area, there are four such photographers.
David Clapp of Kingsport, a former Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep volunteer, took the photos of Samuel.
“I thought it was going to be uncomfortable, and we almost didn’t do it,” Tania said. ... “But he was so discreet that he did not interrupt us. We didn’t even know he was there. He just took pictures of us with him. He didn’t do, ‘Let’s do a pose.’ A lot of the pictures look like they were posed, but they weren’t. It was just us being with him.”
Clapp snapped pictures of Tania and Thomas with their son, pictures of Samuel with his older sister Sarah, who wasn’t quite a year old at the time, and pictures of other family members with Samuel.
“He didn’t miss anything,” Tania said.
In addition to the photographs, the Bellamys were given a video of those photos set to music, a photo album and a CD of pictures. “I know we wanted pictures, but we knew our time was so short with him,” Tania said. “I don’t think we would have stopped to say, ‘Hey, let’s take some pictures.’”
Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep was started in Colorado in 2005. Maddux Achilles Haggard was born on Feb. 4, 2005, with myotubular myopathy, a condition that prevented him from breathing, swallowing or moving on his own. On the sixth day, his parents had to make the excruciating decision to take him off life support. Before they did, they called Littleton, Colo., photographer Sandy Puc’ to take black-and-white portraits of them cradling their son.
Those photographs documenting Maddux’s eternal connection with his parents inspired Cheryl Haggard and Puc’ to found the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Locally, Karen Jenkins is working to get the word out about the organization. She joined Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep as a parent coordinator for Tri-Cities after three friends in Ohio lost babies in a 14-month time period.
“A couple of them had used the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep service and had pictures taken of their babies, and I thought that was a really neat thing,” Jenkins said. “I looked them up on the Internet and saw there were no photographers in our area from that service. I thought so many women in this area were missing out on it. I want to raise awareness that this is not a weird or morbid thing. It’s a beautiful thing. .... A chance to have those memories and keep them forever.”
As parent coordinator, Jenkins fields the phone calls when there’s a death and works to arrange a photographer. She’s also working hard to get the word out about the organization.
“My first goal was to let the hospitals know, but then I thought, ‘What if they start calling me, and I don’t have any photographers?’”
Jenkins located four photographers who applied to the organization and were accepted.
“We do have four photographers now. One in Wise, and she will take Lonesome Pine and the Norton hospitals. We have one in Blountville, two in Johnson City. We’ve got them scattered enough to where we can cover any hospital in the Tri-Cities, but we could always use more photographers,” Jenkins said. “That’s my second goal, to have others apply. It’s very emotionally taxing to do a session. When you do a session with a deceased baby, it’s sad and it affects you emotionally, and you don’t want to do too many of those back-to-back. We don’t want to burn them out.”
Melanie Moss became a Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep-approved photographer in March.
“I had been watching the organization for about two years now, and I felt like I wanted to be involved starting the beginning of this year,” Moss said. “I have three really young children, and I didn’t know if I could do it because it’s such a difficult situation to put yourself in.”
Since being approved, Moss, who has had her own photography business for about four years, has worked with one family. Because Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is a new offering in the area, that family didn’t have a clear understanding of what Moss wanted to do.
“They didn’t understand what was happening when I came in,” she said. “When I came in with all my professional equipment, they were shocked ... They have been very, very thankful for the pictures because they’re beautiful images of their baby.”
Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep offers training sessions for its photographers, but none have been provided in this area, so Moss relied on a training manual and has access to a forum for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photographers.
“What I did was read a bunch of information on the forum and when I was called, I was told that my baby had a birth defect and I looked up that birth defect on the forum and saw other pictures. ... I wanted to be prepared to go in and not be shocked in front of the family,” she said. “I had to have both a game plan and prepare to be flexible. My game plan was I wanted to gauge how the parents were doing emotionally. ... What I didn’t know was if the parents wanted to have pictures with their baby. They didn’t want pictures with their baby. They agreed to have their hands [pictured].”
Moss said she approached the session like it was a job, and the parents were her clients.
“I looked at it as a professional job. I could try and understand what they were going through. I could empathize with them ... and I knew what a blessing it would be. I went in there confidently. Leaving was harder, and it took me about three days to actually look through the pictures,” she said.
Moss presented the parents with about 30 edited images of their baby. She created a slide show to music, and gave them a CD of the images and the copyrights.
“It’s a very humbling thing and I was very honored that I was able to get so personal with their baby who they only got to spend a short amount of time with,” she said.
Jenkins wants nurses to call her prior to the delivery, giving her time to locate an available photographer.
“That’s the ideal situation. There’s no ideal situation, but to get a photographer there at the right time, that’s the best case scenario,” she said.

A wonderful non-profit organization, that helps parents heal from the loss of a young infant through bereavement photography, is getting started here in the Tri Cities. Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep was started in Colorado in 2005 when a photographer, at the request of the family, captured beautiful images of a baby who had unexpectedly passed away. The photographs were so important to the mother as providing lasting memories of her child, that the two started NILMDTS. Now there are more than 7,000 professional photographers in 25 countries that volunteer their services to families in need of free remembrance portraiture.

Taking photos was the last thing on Danyelle Ramirez's mind when her son Troy, who was born 14 weeks premature on Sept. 24, 2008, was given a 60 percent chance of survival.

A social worker at San Antonio's Methodist Hospital told her about Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep — a group of volunteer photographers who take free portraits of stillborns and terminally ill newborns as keepsakes for their parents.

The Most Emotional Photographs You May Ever Make

Many photographers get into the photography business because it is a powerful medium that has the capability to affect lives, help bring about positive change, and record important moments in history. Most professional photographers love their jobs, and feel fortunate to be getting paid to do something they love.

Tucked away in a quiet little corner of Photo Plus Expo was a tiny booth that many attendees probably missed. As Andrew Fingerman (PhotoShelter's VP of Marketing) and I were waiting to speak to someone in a neighboring display, we found ourselves standing in front of The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep booth. It was decorated with beautiful portraits of newborn babies and their parents...

Snapshots of a much-too-brief life

By Kay Campbell
Saturday, October 23, 2010

For his daughter's entire lifetime, Joey Karr smiled into her eyes.
Then the infant, who was born with a fatal form of dwarfism, died in her mother's arms as her three siblings patted her.

Photographer Kelly Clark Baugher caught that lifetime of love in photos, images that are now sacred with the weight of life and loss that the death of a baby brings.

Baugher is one of a small but devoted number of professional photographers who volunteer at hospitals to take pictures of heartbreakingly short-lived joy. A Colorado-based group, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, sends professional photographers, if the families request them, to quietly record a child's brief life.
