A permanent mark on my body

« back to news

A permanent mark on my body representing the life of my baby brother was something I never thought I would have when I was a young girl. As I grew older, into my teenage years I began to contemplate whether I wanted to mark a piece of my body permanently, forever. Then a peaceful reflection came over me... this would be a part of my body that would be a constant physical reminder of my baby brother Maddux. Now that I am almost 18 years old and it has been 13 years since Maddux’s birth and death, this was a step in my life I knew I would never regret. I’ve thought about when I grow older and have a family of my own, my children would see this part of my body and I can tell them all about Maddux, my mom, and how he made such a huge impact in this world because of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

My tattoo is the birthday of Maddux, February 4th, 2005 in Roman numerals with a halo over the year. A day that holds a special place in my heart that comes with feelings of excitement and sadness. But I know going through the pain of getting a tattoo, I will only be reminded of how special this day truly is. I will be reminded that he left his imprint on this world in only 6 short days. And that he, Maddux Achilles Haggard, will forever hold a piece of my heart. Now, not only will I be reminded of his legacy through his photographs, but also each and every time I look at myself in the mirror and see the date of his birth.

Last week for Maddux’s 13th Birthday we asked everyone to honor him with a recurring donation in the amount of $13/month. A $13 a month donation is fewer dollars than you likely spend for one lunch out a month. Instead, give a priceless gift of Remembrance Portraits to a family to have for generations!

You can add your baby’s name to the donation as well to bring them great honor with Maddux!
