“Dear God, please let the nurse find the heartbeat!” I desperately pleaded to the Maker of all things.

Earlier that day, it was just a normal hot July day. I was tied up with mothering my two girls, doing laundry, weeding the flower garden, and tidying up the house…at 37 weeks 2 days pregnant.

It wasn’t until after the girls were in bed that night that I thought about not feeling baby kicks, so I drank a big glass of orange juice and waited for the pounding of those tiny feet. But nothing, I was getting nervous and called my mom, an OB nurse. She told me everything is probably fine, but to go to the hospital so I wouldn’t worry about it all night.

By now both the nurse and the doctor could not find the heartbeat and our hearts plummeted. We were in shock, this couldn’t be happening, it felt like a terrible, horrible dream. As it all began to sink in, I remember praying again and asking for a miracle, “Please Lord I know you can bring my baby back to life.”

In July we celebrated Alexa Grace’s 9th heavenly birthday. Our precious pictures of her are next to all our other family photos on our walls. She is forever in our hearts and we long to be reunited with her in heaven. Every year since, my husband and I have donated to NILMDTS because of our appreciation for the priceless images of our daughter, Alexa. But inside I knew someday I wanted to do more.

Two years ago, me and my business partner started Grounded Goods, designing craft jewelry and home decor. Our mission is to create products that are both unique and give back, specifically to female-focused nonprofits. Today, 25% of our net profits from our wood earrings are donated to three organizations including, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep!

Giving back to amazing organizations like NILMDTS has given our business purpose and even more passion. I love how this has come full circle…people showing love to those hurting and love reciprocating.

In honor of Alexa and all the precious babies gone too soon, we have designed a special earring for NILMDTS to be sold during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. 25% of all proceeds of the custom earring will be donated back to NILMDTS to help continue the mission of providing the complimentary gift of remembrance portraiture to future bereaved families.
